Saudi Ambassador to the Arab League Ahmad 'Abd Al-'Aziz Qattan explained the Saudi position: "No one is opposed to resistance everywhere in the Arab world, but the true aim of any resistance must be the liberation of land. If the land has [already] been liberated, then the role of the resistance must end, and it must be dissolved into the melting pot of the country..."

I guess that by "liberation of land" he means destroying Israel and "liberating" the land that, according to the Arab thought, belongs to the Arabs.

On the other hand,

columnist and former editor-in-chief of the Egyptian government daily Al-Akhbar, Galal Duweidar, wrote: "As is known to all – and to Israel as well – Israel's refusal to sit at the negotiating table led to despair among the Palestinian people. Likewise, its determination to persist in its occupation of Lebanese territories and to apply pressure, through the U.S., to lay siege to the legitimate resistance to this occupation [i.e. Hizbullah] – these are among the factors that encouraged the outbreak of this crisis. It is impossible to separate the aggression and the destruction planned in advance that is occurring in Lebanon from what is happening in the Palestinian territories. Did Israel think that the Palestinians and the Lebanese should surrender and accept the occupation and the [territorial] expansion? In fact, the international conventions grant peoples the right to resist occupation and to confront military forces..."

I don't understand why he lumps together Palestinians and Lebanese: first, there is no Palestinian state, so it can't be occupied. Moreover, both Gaza and the West Bank are under the Palestinian control, not Israeli. Second, Israel withdrew from southern Lebanon in 2000 and there is no Lebanese territory occupied by Israel any more. This fact was verified by the United Nations.

On 16 June, the Secretary-General reported to the Security Council that UNIFIL had completed the verification process, and confirmed that Israeli forces had withdrawn from Lebanon in compliance with resolution 425 (1978) and met the requirements defined by the Secretary-General (S/2000/590 and Corr.1). Notwithstanding their reservations about the withdrawal line, the Governments of Israel and Lebanon both confirmed that identifying this line was solely the responsibility of the United Nations and that they would respect the line as identified.

Ahmad Abd Al-Aziz Qattan, saúdský velvyslanec u Arabské ligy, vysvětlil postoj Saúdské Arábie: "Nikdo není proti odboji všude v arabském světě, ale skutečným cílem každého odboje musí být osvobození země. Jestliže [už] země byla osvobozena, pak role odboje musí skončit a musí se rozpustit v tavicím kotli země..."

Myslím, že "osvobozením země" myslí zničení Izraele a "osvobození" půdy, která podle arabského názoru patří Arabům.

Naproti tomu

Nechápu, proč spojuje dohromady Palestince a Libanonce. Za prvé, palestinský stát neexistuje, takže ho nelze okupovat. Navíc Gaza i Západní břeh jsou pod palestinskou správou, nikoliv izraelskou. Za druhé, Izrael se stáhnul z jižního Libanonu v roce 2000, a tak žádná část libanonského území už není okupována Izraelem. Tento fakt potvrdila i OSN.

Generální tajemník dne 16. června podal zprávu Radě bezpečnosti, že UNIFIL dokončily ověřovací proces a potvrdily, že izraelské jednotky se stáhly z Libanonu v souladu s rezolucí 425 (1978) a splnily požadavky stanovené generálním tajemníkem (S/2000/590 a Corr.1). Izraelská i libanonská vláda, nehledě na své výhrady s linií stažení, potvrdily, že určení této linie je výhradně zodpovědností OSN a že budou takto určenou linii respektovat.

Anti-Israel and anti-USA groups organized a demonstration in Brussels today. It was advertised as a "Rassemblement contre l'agression sioniste au Liban et à Gaza", "gathering against the Zionist aggression in Lebanon and in Gaza". (No word about Hezbollah violating the internationally recognized border between Lebanon and Israel.) About 3,000 to 5,000 Arabs, muslims and leftist Europeans walked from Boulevard du Roi Albert II to Place de l'Albertine chanting (and carrying) anti-Israel and anti-US slogans. The crowd waved not only Lebanese flags but also Hezbollah and Iranian ones (along with a sign "Iran fait vite"), among others. Actually, you would think it was a pro-Hezbollah party, as the crowd chanted "Vive Hezbollah, vive Hamas!" together with "Allahu akbar".

I hoped that there would be some counter-demonstration somewhere along the route but there was none. On the contrary, just before the end, an ultraorthodox Jew (a rabbi; I didn't catch his name) appeared in front of the microphone. In his speech, he basically called for destruction of Israel and creation of a "Palestinian state within the borders of historic Palestine", he proclaimed a support to Hezbollah and repeated several times "the Jews are not Zionists, the Zionists are not Jews". (By the way, he was wearing a sign with the same words around his neck. It was somehow very ominous.) I guess he didn't see this sign: "Jews: killing in your name?" It's distressing to see a Jew being so keen on supporting his enemies.

I also saw an attempt to burn the Israeli flag while the crowd cheered. It was unsuccessful since the two youngsters in kafiyeh could not start the fire. So they and others tore the flag up instead, stepping on it and cleaning their shoes with the pieces.

The final speeches were particularly vitriolic. Apart from the usual "Israel is the real danger in the Middle East" and equating Israel and the USA with fascism, there were also accusations of Israel using "weapons of mass destruction" that are "prohibited by international community". The speakers constantly stressed that the Lebanese have a right to "resistance". Of course, nobody mentioned there was no need to resist to anything since there were no Israeli soldiers in Lebanon until the Israeli government had to (finally) react to Hezballah launching rockets into Israeli cities and a flagrant violation of the recognized border by Hezbollah few weeks ago when they kidnapped and killed Israeli soldiers.

I wonder when there will be a pro-Israel demonstration in Brussels. (Well, I can dream, can't I?)

Three terror bombings that killed at least 56 people in Jordan's capital sparked furious protests against al Qaeda on Thursday after a Web site carried a claim that the group was behind the attacks.

Jordanians flooded Amman blaring car horns and waving the nation's flag to protest the suicide attacks at three hotels with Western connections.

Hundreds of angry Jordanians rallied, shouting, "Burn in hell, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi!" after the claim of responsibility was posted.

The Amman protest was organized by Jordan's 14 professional and trade unions – made up of both hard-line Islamic groups and leftist political organizations – traditional critics of King Abdullah II's moderate, pro-Western policies.

Update at 11:45 pm EST: Everyone denies Arafat is clinically dead. No one, however, denies his condition is very grave. In other words: a real announcement of his death can be expected very soon. Or maybe he has already died but the Palestinian leadership tries to find way how to transfer the leadership of the country without chaos?

Stav Jásira Arafata, který je hospitalizován ve francouzské nemocnici s neurčenou nemocí, se podle palestinského zástupce během posledního dne značně zhoršil.

Zmíněný nejmenovaný zástupce potvrdil, že Arafatův stav je velmi vážný. Dále řekl, že lékaři zatím neurčili, co s ním je, jelikož provedené testy měli negativní výsledky. Arafatův stav se přesto ve středu zhoršil.

The condition of Yasser Arafat, in a French hospital for treatment of an unidentified ailment, has deteriorated significantly over the past day, a Palestinian official said early Thursday.

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed a report on Channel 2 that Arafat was in very serious condition. He said that so far doctors have not determined what is wrong with him, as tests have come back without positive results, but Arafat's condition took a turn for the worse on Wednesday.

I give him till the end of this year.

Včerejší útok v Tel Avivu ukazuje, proč Izrael s výstavbou plotu nemůže (a neměl by) přestat. (Mimochodem, zmínku o útoku musíte jak v článku iDnes, tak v podobném článku na webu Lidových novin hledat jako jediný odstavec až někde v polovině teprve poté, co je zmíněna odmítavá reakce izraelského premiéra Šarona na rozhodnutí MSD; jedině Novinkám stálo za to, aby vražednému útoku v Tel Avivu věnovaly samostatný článek.) A pro ty, kteří se starají o dobro Palestinců, by mělo být nedávné rozhodnutí izraelského Nejvyššího soudního dvoru, kterým bylo nařízeno přemístění zhruba 30 km ze 40-kilometrového úseku okolo Jeruzaléma, protože „závažně a naléhavě poškozuje místní obyvatelstvo a porušuje jejich práva vyplývající z mezinárodního humanitárního práva“, dostatečným důkazem, že Izrael není kriminálním státem, jak se ho evidentně snaží vylíčit MSD. (Je třeba zdůraznit, že izraelský nejvyšší soud zároveň uznal oprávněnost plotu jako bezpečnostní bariéry, což iDnes, na rozdíl od Novinek, opět „opomněl“ ve svém článku napsat.) Naopak, Izrael je jediným státem Blízkého východu, kde je vláda zodpovědná za své činy a soudy jsou nezávislými institucemi snažícími se dobrat práva.

Yesterday’s attack in Tel Aviv shows why Israel can’t (and shouldn’t) stop building the fence. (By the way, Czech web media seem to ignore the attack, or at least they didn’t find it so important as to run an article about it. They only mentioned it in one paragraph within an article about Israel’s prime minister Sharon’s reaction to the ICJ’s ruling. See iDnes and Lidové noviny. They effectively make the attack non-existent for the Czech readers. Only Novinky published a full-length article.) And for those so concerned with Palestinian well-being, the recent ruling by the Israel’s High Court of Justice, which ordered some 30 kilometers out of a 40-km stretch of the fence around Jerusalem to be rerouted because it “injures the local inhabitants in a severe and acute way, while violating their rights under humanitarian international law”, should be enough proof that Israel is not a criminal state as ICJ apparently wants to present it. (It’s also necessary to point out that the Israel’s High Court recognized legality of the fence as a security barrier. This fact was omitted by an article at iDnes website, while Novinky mentioned it.) On the contrary, Israel is the only country in the Middle East where the government is accountable for its actions and the courts are independent institutions seeking justice.

Jordánské úřady v pondělí oznámily, že překazily údajné spiknutí Al Kajdy, při kterém měl být v srdci jordánského hlavního města Ammánu vypuštěn smrtelný chemický mrak.

Podle jordánské vlády by tento plán byl smrtelnější, než cokoliv, co Al Kajda doposud předvedla, včetně útoků z 11. září.

Lidé, kteří stále věří, že s teroristy můžeme vyjednávat, jsou buď jenom naivní anebo, což je horší, mají přeludy. Teroristi zjevně kašlou na životy svých muslimských souvěrců v Ammánu, tak proč by se měli starat o nějaké nevěrce jinde? A nezapomeňme, že ti, kteří připravovali útoky v Jordánsku, byly úzce propojeni s teroristy podněcujícími nepokoje v Iráku. Nechtějí svobodný, stabilní a demokratický Irák, který by mohl „zamořit“ demokratickými myšlenkami ostatní země v oblasti a tak islámské fanatiky připravit o jejich vliv.

Jordanian authorities said Monday they have broken up an alleged al Qaeda plot that would have unleashed a deadly cloud of chemicals in the heart of Jordan's capital, Amman.

The plot would have been more deadly than anything al Qaeda has done before, including the September 11 attacks, according to the Jordanian government.

People who still believe we can negotiate with the terrorists are just naïve or, worse, delusional. The terrorists apparently don’t give a damn about the lives of their Muslim brethren in Amman so why should they care about some infidels elsewhere? And let’s not forget those preparing attacks in Jordan were closely connected to the terrorists stirring up unrest in Iraq. They don’t want a free, stable and democratic Iraq that could “infest” other countries in the region with democratic ideas and thus strip the fanatic Islamists of their influence.

„Vyšetřování“ úřadu ovšem trvá už asi rok. Vloni v únoru poslal německý poslanec Evropského parlamentu Armin Laschet dopis evropskému komisaři pro vnější vztahy Chrisi Pattenovi. V dopise požadoval prošetření palestinského zneužití fondů EU. Chris Patten byl původně proti jakémukoliv vyšetřování, svůj názor ale změnil, když více než 100 evropských poslanců podepsalo petici požadující oficiální vyšetřování. Myslím, že Patten se obával, že vyšetřování potvrdí, že Palestinská samospráva použila část unijních peněz na financování teroristických aktivit v Izraeli. V listopadu 2003 OLAF vydal prohlášení popírající, že fondy EU byly zneužity na financování palestinských teroristů.

Přesuňme se do února 2004 – bylo zahájeno nové (?) prošetřování. Budou tentokrát výsledky odlišné? Těžko, říká londýnský Daily Mail.

Je to protože zástupci EU, vedení komisařem EU pro vnější záležitosti Chrisem Pattenem, opakovaně ignorují náznaky toho, že milióny eur z peněz daňových poplatníků možná končí v nesprávných palestinských kapsách.

V naději posílení svazků s Jásirem Arafatem a arabským světem prokazují evropští vůdci obdivuhodnou neochotu přesně zjistit, jak je jejich finanční pomoc utracena.

EU prohlašuje, že na peníze (10 miliónů euro měsíčně) „úzkostlivě dohlížel MMF“. Skutečně?

Pattenovo tvrzení, že na peníze EU úzkostlivě dohlížel MMF, bylo zpochybněno Salaamem Fajádem, zástupcem MMF zodpovědným za dohled a nyní palestinským ministrem financí.

Bývalý palestinský ministr Abdel Fattah Hamayel přiznává, že měsíčně platil 40 000 dolarů na 'životní výdaje' těm ozbrojencům Brigád mučedníků od Al-Aksá, kteří ještě nebyli zaměstnáni palestinskými bezpečnostními složkami.

Takže říkají „úzkostlivý dohled“. Hm. Tady je další znepokojivé znamení, že tu něco smrdí:

Palestinská síť neziskových organizací nedávno bez obalu odmítla podepsat závazek vyžadovaný americkou organizací USAID poskytující finanční a jinou pomoc, že nebudou 'poskytovat materiální podporu nebo zdroje žádnému jednotlivci či právnímu subjektu, který obhajuje, plánuje, sponzoruje, nebo který je či byl zapojen do teroristických aktivit'.

Tyto organizace řekly, že raději odmítnou 1,3 miliónu dolarů, které od USAID dostaly během uplynulých deseti let, než aby podepsaly takový závazek.

EU by měla zvážit požadavek podobného závazku, spolu s konkrétními kroky, od palestinských neziskových organizací a vlády Palestinské samosprávy.

Moc růžově to nevidím.

However, OLAF’s “investigation” has been actually going on for about a year. Last February, Armin Laschet, a member of the European Parliament (MEP), sent a letter to Chris Patten, the EU Commissioner for external relations, requesting investigation of Palestinian misuse of EU funds. Chris Patten was originally against any investigation, but changed his tune when over a hundred MEPs signed a petition asking for an official inquiry. I think Patten was afraid an investigation would confirm the Palestinian Authority used some of the EU money to fund terrorist activity in Israel. In November 2003, OLAF issued a statement denying EU funds were misused to finance Palestinian terrorists.

Fast forward to February 2004 – a new (?) investigation has started. Will the results be different this time? Unlikely, says London’s Daily Mail.

That's because European Union officials, orchestrated by EU External Relations Commissioner Chris Patten, have repeatedly ignored the signs that millions of euros of taxpayers' money may be ending up in the wrong Palestinian pockets.

In the hope of strengthening ties with Yasser Arafat and the Arab world, EU leaders have proved remarkably reluctant to find out exactly how their aid money is spent.

EU claims the funds (10 million euro monthly) “were minutely supervised by the IMF”. Were they really?

Patten's claims that the EU funds were minutely supervised by the IMF have been disputed by the IMF official responsible, Salaam Fayyad, now Palestinian finance minister.

Former Palestinian cabinet minister Abdel Fattah Hamayel admits paying ,000 per month 'living expenses' to those Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades gunmen not already employed by the Palestinian security forces.

Last week, lawyer Khader Shekirat was arrested by Palestinian police after the EU accused him of stealing m from LAW – the EU-funded Palestinian human rights group which he headed.

So “minutely supervised”, they say. Hm. Here is another disturbing sign there is something fishy:

Recently, the Palestinian NGO Network flatly refused to sign a pledge, requested by the American aid body USAID, that they will not 'provide material support or resources to any individual or entity that advocates, plans, sponsors, engages in or has engaged in terrorist activity'.

They said they preferred to reject the .3m received from USAID in the past decade rather than sign the pledge.

The EU should consider a similar pledge – combined with concrete action – from the Palestinian NGOs and the Palestinian Authority government.

I wouldn’t hold my breath.

Dror Duga, 17-letý středoškolák, řekl, že byl asi o ulici dál, když viděl autobus vybuchnout. "Lidé vyletěli střechou autobusu. Ulice byla mrtvá. Potom lidé v budovách okolo začali křičet. Na zemi byly kousky lidského masa, ruce a hlava."

Galit Gabai, 29 let, jela autobusem na svůj první pracovní den do opravny fotoaparátů v centru města.

"Před očima jsem měla tmu. Slyšela jsem křik. Žena vedle mě byla roztržená, všechny její vnitřnosti byly venku," řekla třesoucím se hlasem v nemocnici Bikur Cholim, kde se vzpamatovávala ze šoku, a ukazála si na svoje vlastní břicho.

Pan Perlman, který vede květinářství, řekl, že lidé utíkali na místo atentátu hledat své milované. ...

Řekl, že když šel na pomoc obětem, viděl spodní část ženského těla.

"Ponožky byly hnědé. Boty byly černé." Říkal, že něco podobného viděl jako voják bojující v Egyptě ve válce z roku 1973.

"Ale to byli vojáci, ne civilisté," řekl. "To byla válka. Tohle není válka."

Opravdu znepokojivé je, že světová komunita dost málo odsuzuje palestinské teroristické akce. Když ale izraelská armáda honí pachatele těchto odporných zločinů, spravedliví celého světa mají spoustu řečí. Dokonce se i snaží zastavit výstavbu plotu podél Zelené linie, kterým se Izrael snaží zabránit teroristům, aby ji bez problémů překračovali. A mezitím Kofi Annan z OSN požádal Izraelce a Palestince, aby se

"povznesli nad pocity hněvu a odplaty, jakkoliv přirozené, a věnovali všechnu svoji energii na vyjednání opravdového a trvalého míru, ve kterém by dva národy žily bok po boku, každý ve svém vlastním státě."

Myslím, že svá slova měl směřovat spíše k Palestincům, kteří zjevně věnují veškerou svou energii na zabíjení Izraelců.

Možná tohle zařízení pomůže ochránit nevinné lidi před teroristy:

Zdroje z Ministerstva dopravy ve čtvrtek oznámily, že v příštích několika týdnech má být v nejméně dvou vozech v Jeruzalémě testován prototyp detekčního a bariérového systému, který má zabránit atentátníkům, aby se dostali do autobusů.

Systém vyvinutý ministerstvem a Israel Military Industries se skládá z bariéry u předních dveří obsluhované řidičem, dále zadních dveří pouze pro výstup, a detektorů kovů.

Mluvčí Ministerstva dopravy Avner Ovadia řekl, že i když se terorista rozhodne odpálit bombu ve vstupních dveřích autobusu, výsledek bude méně krutý, než kdyby byl uvnitř autobusu. Panely odolné výbuchu bomby ochrání řídiče a cestující vepředu od výbuchu nebo šrapnelů.

Doufám, že to pomůže. Přesto se musím ptát, proč tohle vůbec musí být nutné.

A little reality, as reported by The New York Times:

Naim Barazani had just transferred to the bus when the bomber exploded. "What I remember is that the heads of two old people fell next to me," he said. "You don't know what trauma that is, to look, to see those heads coming down, as if they were chicken heads." ...

Soon after the blast, the charred body of a man, his head thrown back, his skin a dark gray, sat in a seat in the middle of the wreck. He had no feet and no arms.

Dror Duga, a 17-year-old high school student, said he was about a block away when he saw the bus explode. "People flew out of the roof of the bus," he said. "The street was dead. Then the people in the buildings started screaming. There were pieces of flesh on the ground, hands and a head."

Galit Gabai, 29, had caught the bus to ride to her first day of work downtown at a camera repair shop.

"I saw black before my eyes," she said. "I heard screaming. Next to me a woman was spread out, with all her organs on the outside." Her voice shaking, she gestured at her own stomach as she recovered from shock in Bikur Holim hospital.

Mr. Perlman, who runs the flower store, said that people rushed to the scene searching for loved ones. ...

He said as he went to help the victims, he saw the lower half of a woman's torso.

"The socks were brown," he said. "The shoes were black." He said he had seen similar sights as a combat soldier fighting Egypt in the war of 1973.

"But it was soldiers, not civilians," he said. "It was a war. This is not a war."

What's really disturbing is very little condemnation of Palestinian terrorist acts by the world community. But when the Israeli army goes after the perpetrators of these heinous crimes, there is much outcry from the world's righteous. They even try to stop Israel from building a fence along the Green Line to prevent the terrorists from crossing it with ease. And in the meantime, U.N.'s Kofi Annan asked Israelis and Palestinians to

"rise above feelings of anger and vengeance, however natural, and to devote all their energies to negotiating a true and lasting peace in which two peoples will live side by side, each in their own state."

I think he should have directed his words more to the Palestinians who seem to devote all their energies to killing Israelis.

Maybe this device will help to protect innocent people from terrorists:

A prototype detection and barrier system to block bombers from getting on buses is to be tested in the next few weeks on at least two vehicles in Jerusalem, Transport Ministry sources said Thursday.

The system, developed by the ministry and Israel Military Industries, comprises a driver-controlled barrier at the front entrance, a disembark-only door at the rear, and metal detectors.

Transport Ministry spokesman Avner Ovadia says even if a terrorist decides to detonate a bomb at the bus door, the result would be less severe than if he were on board. Bomb resistant panels will protect the driver and passengers at the front of the bus from blast or shrapnel.

The threat was among several findings detailed in the report by the United Nations' al Qaeda and Taliban Sanctions Committee which also cited a shifting of the terror network's strategy, a move towards "softer" targets and a warning the group was working towards a biological or chemical attack.

And this year, at the beginning of Ramadan, the Islamic terrorists bombed several places in Baghdad, including Iraqi police stations. The Islamic terrorists kill other Muslims just because they dare to think differently. just because they dare to think, period.

GAZA CITY (CNN) – Palestinian security forces Thursday rounded up five suspects in northern Gaza in connection with the deadly roadside bombing of a U.S. convoy a day earlier, including at least three members believed part of a breakaway militant faction, Palestinian security sources said. ...

In overnight operations in the Jabaliya refugee camp, security forces exchanged fire with some of the suspects before detaining them, the sources said. No injuries were reported.

Located near the bombing site in northern Gaza, the suspects in Jabaliya belong to the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) and are affiliated with the Popular Resistance Committees, the sources said.

What’s more, the EU officials suddenly side with the victims, not with the terrorists.

Officials said the EU wants Arafat to "deliver on security" or hand over control of the security forces to the Palestinian government led by Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia.

OSLO, 10. října – Íránská právnička Širin Ebadi se v pátek stala první muslimkou, která získala Nobelovu cenu míru za odvážnou obranu lidských práv. Toto ocenění má podnítit větší demokracii v islámském světě.

Norský Nobelův výbor ocenil Ebadi, jednu z prvních žen mezi íránskými soudci předtím než ji revoluce v roce 1979 přinutila odstoupit ve prospěch mužů, za to, že bojuje za obranu práv žen a dětí.

56-letá Širin Ebadi byla oceněna z rekordního počtu 165 kandidátů, včetně papeže Jana Pavla II. a bývalého českého prezidenta Václava Havla. Mnozí toto ocenění přivítali, ale bývalý polský prezident Lech Walesa, nositel Nobelovy ceny míru z roku 1983, řekl, že cenu měl získat polský papež.

OSLO, Oct 10 – Iranian lawyer Shirin Ebadi became the first Muslim woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize Friday for a fearless defense of human rights in an award designed to spur wider democracy in the Islamic world.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Ebadi – Iran's first female judge before the 1979 Islamic revolution forced her to step down in favor of men – for battling to defend the rights of women and children.

Ebadi, 56, won from a field of 165 candidates including Pope John Paul II and ex-Czech President Vaclav Havel. Many hailed the award but former Polish President Lech Walesa, the 1983 Nobel winner, said the Polish pope should have won.

The five-member committee said Ebadi, jailed several times during her career and once branded a threat to the Islamic system, was a "sound professional" and a "courageous person" who had "never heeded threats to her own safety."

"We hope that the prize will be an inspiration for all those who struggle for human rights and democracy in her country, in the Muslim world, and in all countries where the fight for human rights needs inspiration and support," the committee said.

Palestinský Hamas, zodpovědný za řadu atentátů na Blízkém východě, stihla rána. Evropská unie podle diplomatů souhlasí se zařazením politického křídla tohoto hnutí [sic!] na seznam zakázaných teroristických organizací. Rozhodnutí umožní zmrazit účty křídla a pohnat řadu členů Hamasu před soud.

Jenom bych rád věděl, co přesvědčilo váhavou Unii přijmout pozici Izraele a USA, co se Hamasu týče. (Navíc ve výroční den útoků z 11. září 2001.) Pozitivní je, že se EU k tomuto kroku odhodlala.

The Palestinian Hamas who is responsible for a number of bombings in the Middle East has been struck by an [unexpected] blow. According to diplomats, the European Union agreed to put the political wing of this movement [sic!] on its list of banned terrorist organizations. The decision will allow to freeze the wing's accounts and prosecute many Hamas's members.

I just wonder what persuaded the reluctant Union to accept Israel's and U.S. position on Hamas. (On the anniversary of 9/11, no less.) It's good the EU made this decision after all.

Ministerstvo školství Palestinské samosprávy zakázalo školám vyvěšovat na stěnách plakáty „mučedníků“ zabitých při násilnostech v uplynulých třech letech. Pohrozilo zároveň potrestat každého, kdo toto nařízení neuposlechne.

Ministerstvo také vydalo instrukce, které školákům zakazují účastnit se demonstrací nebo jiných aktivit souvisejících se současným násilím, včetně kreslením grafiti na zdech.

Zakázány byly i politické aktivity ve školních budovách a žákům, kteří nová nařízení poruší, hrozí vyloučení ze školy, varovalo ministerstvo.

Vypadá to jako slibný začátek; otázkou ale zůstává, jak nekompromisně bude ministerstvo kontrolovat a trestat porušení těchto nařízení.

The Palestinian Authority Education Ministry has banned schools from hanging on their walls posters of "martyrs" killed in the violence over the past three years, threatening to punish anyone who defies the order.

The ministry has also issued instructions banning schoolchildren from participating in demonstrations or any other activities related to the current violence, including painting graffiti on walls.

Political activities inside the premises of schools have also been prohibited and pupils who violate the new regulations face being dismissed from their schools, the ministry warned.

It looks like a promising beginning; it remains to be seen how uncompromising the Ministry will be in controlling and enforcing violations of these orders.

Desítky přiznivců Hamasu na místě útoku namáčeli své pěsti v krvi a sazích, a za provolávání "Bůh je velký" je zvedali do vzduchu a hrozili odplatou.

Kdyby to bylo tak jednoduché, už by dávno byl mír všude na světě. Jenže ono to tak jednoduché není. Používat lásku a porozumění jde jen tak dlouho, dokud i druhá strana má o zájem o to samé. Palestinští teroristi mají ale zájem o jediné – jak zabít co nejvíc Židů. Nenávist je na denním pořádku a dokonce se nepřímo podporuje i ve školách, táborech pro děti a v oficiálních médiích. Izrael pak může používat tuny lásky a hektolitry porozumění, leč vše bude marné.

If it were so easy, the whole world would live in peace now. But it is not so easy. You can use love and understanding only as long as the other party is interested in the same. Palestinian terrorirts, however, are interested only in killing as many Jews as possible. Hatred is a daily staple and it is indirectly supported at schools, children's camps and in the official media. Israel can use tons of love and gallons of understanding without any effect.

JERUZALÉM, 19.8. – Sebevražedný palestinský atentátník zabil minimálně 18 lidí, včetně dětí, když odpálil nálož naplněnou kuličkovými ložisky v autobuse MHD plném rodin, z nichž některé se vracely od nejposvátnějšího židovského místa, Zdi nářků.

Ozvěna výbuchu, který utrhl střechu autobusu a vyrazil jeho okna, se nesla Jeruzalémem. Výbuch rozmetal části lidských těl na vepředu jedoucí výletní autobus a otevřel tak hlubokou ránu v mírovém úsilí podporovaném USA.

V jednom z nejsmrtelnějších útoků během tříletého konfliktu bylo zraněno více než 100 lidí, mnoho z nich vážně. Muži nesoucí zakrvácené děti utíkali vstříc přijíždějícím sanitkám. Na ulici pokryté rozbitým sklem a zakrvaveným plechem se muž klečící vedle roztříštěného autobusu snažil dávat umělé dýchání batoleti.

Nad Hebronem dnes večer vybuchoval ohňostroj, když Palestinci oslavovali bombový útok.

Až se mi z toho dělá špatně. Má tahle sběř vůbec ještě nárok na vlastní stát? Bude premiér Abbás konečně donucen tvrdě zakročit proti všem teroristickým skupinám a přestane se vymlouvat na nebezpečí vyvolání palestinské občanské války?

JERUSALEM, Aug. 19 – A Palestinian suicide bomber killed at least 18 people, including children, when he detonated an explosive packed with ball bearings tonight aboard a city bus crowded with families, some of them returning from Judaism's holiest site, the Western Wall.

The blast resounded across Jerusalem as it peeled up the roof of the bus and blew out its windows, smearing human remains on a preceding tour bus and opening a deep wound in the American-backed peace effort.

More than 100 people were reported hurt, many seriously, in one of the deadliest attacks in almost three years of conflict. Men carrying blood-spattered children raced toward approaching ambulances. On a street strewn with broken glass and bloodied sheet metal, a man knelt near the shattered bus to perform mouth-to-mouth resuscitation on a toddler.

And in the meantime in Hebron:

Fireworks burst over Hebron tonight as Palestinians there celebrated the bombing.

It makes me sick. Does this riff-raff still have any right to their own state? Will the Prime Minister Abbas be finally forced to forcefully confront all terrorist groups without looking for excuses saying there is a danger of a Palestinian civil war?

Mohammed al-Hindi varoval v exkluzivním rozhovoru pro Scotland on Sunday, že militantní palestinské skupiny se připravují na konfrontaci bezprostředně po izraelských vojenských akcích, což by mohlo vést až ke kolapsu křehkého příměří před jeho oficiálním koncem příští měsíc.

Al-Hindi řekl: „Je přirozené, že se během hudny (tříměsíční příměří vyhlášené palestinskými skupinami v červnu) posilujeme.“

Přirozené? Jedině v tom případě, že získání nových zbraní a času na oddech bylo cílem hned od začátku.

In an exclusive interview with Scotland on Sunday, Mohammed al-Hindi warned that militant Palestinian groups are preparing for confrontations in the wake of Israeli military operations that could even lead to the collapse of the fragile truce ahead of next month’s deadline.

Al-Hindi said: "It is natural that we strengthen ourselves during hudna [the three-month ceasefire declared by Palestinian groups in June]."

Natural? Only if acquiring new weapons and time to rest was the goal from the beginning.

RAMALÁH, Západní břeh (AFP) – Tři maskovaní ozbrojenci popravili v centru Ramaláhu na Západním břehu jiného Palestince, kterého obvinili z kolaborace, řekli svědci a bezpečnostní zdroje.

Ozbrojenci podle svědků prohlásili, že patří k Brigádám mučedníků od al-Aksá, což je ozbrojená odnož hnutí Fatah palestinského předáka Jásira Arafata.

„Oběť měla nasazenou masku a ruce spoutané za zády,“ řekl AFP jeden svědek.

„Předtím než ho zastřelili, mu sundali masku. Potom řekli, že je kolaborant a že ho odsuzují k smrti.“

Trojice vystřílela do zad oběti asi 10 kulek a poté se dala na útěk, oznámili svědci. Svědci dále dodali, že ozbrojenci měli kalašnikovy.

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AFP) – Three masked gunmen executed a fellow Palestinian in the centre of the West Bank city of Ramallah after accusing him of being a collaborator, witnesses and security sources said.

The three said they were from the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, an armed offshoot of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's Fatah movement, witnesses said.

"The guy had a mask on and had his hands tied behind his back," one witness told AFP.

"Before they shot him, they took off his mask. They then said he was a collaborator and we sentence him to death."

The trio pumped around 10 bullets into the victim's back before fleeing shortly after 13:30 GMT, witnesses said. The gunmen were armed with kalashnikovs, they added.
