Napětí polevilo - The suspense is over
| Arafat zmizel ze scény. Navždy. Doufám. Arafat dnes konečně zemřel, po dvou týdnech postupného zhoršování jeho stavu. Palestinci budou truchlit pro muže, který jim přinesl beznaděj, smrt a zkázu; pro ně ale přesto byl “otcem”. Přinese jeho smrt naději tomuto regionu? Prokáže nové palestinské vedení více pragmatismu a otevřenosti mírovým rozhovorům s Izraelem? To se teprve uvidí. Já nicméně věřím, že teď se naskytla opravdová šance. Oba národy budou ale potřebovat notnou dávku pomoci od USA. President Bush má možnost, aby se na něj vzpomínalo jako na mírotvorce, když jeden z největších teroristů už teď nemůže osobně zdržovat mírový proces. Jeho politického dědictví se ale nebude možné zbavit tak snadno. Jeho autoritářský způsob vládnutí nad Palestinci nedovolil, aby se objevil někdo, kdo by případně mohl jeho vládu ohrozit. Zdá se, že Palestinci mohou teď, když Arafat odešel, očekávat skutečný boj o moc mezi současným vedením. Rozhodně se tam nudit nebudou. | Arafat is gone. For good. I hope. After two weeks of his condition gradually deteriorating, he finally died today. Palestinians will mourn the man who brought them despair, death and destruction; yet for them he was “the father”. Will his death bring some hope to the region? Will the new Palestinian leadership show more pragmatism and openness to peace negotiations with Israel? That remains to be seen. I, for one, believe there is a real window of opportunity. The two nations will need, however, some serious assistance from the United States. This is a chance for President Bush to be remembered as a peacemaker, now that one of the greatest terrorists cannot personally stall the process anymore. Yet his presence will be felt for some time to come. His authoritarian style of ruling Palestinians did not allow anyone else to emerge as a potential challenger to Arafat’s rule. With Arafat gone, it seems the Palestinians are in for some serious struggle for power among the current leadership. There is definitely no lack of excitement there. |
