| Ještě dva dny zbývají do nejbližšího přiblížení Marsu k Zemi za posledních asi 60 000 let. Jestliže nechcete čekat na další přiblížení (které podle astronomů nastane za 284 let), pak honem vezměte svůj teleskop a vydejte se mimo dosah světel velkoměst, kde budete moci vychutnat zřídkavý pohled na čtvrtou planetu. A i když náhodou teleskop nemáte, a ani neznáte nikoho, kdo ho má, nezoufejte: stále ještě máte naději. Internetová stránka Hubbleova teleskopu 27. srpna po poledni středoevropského času zveřejní barevné snímky Marsu. Já měl to štěstí, že mám kamaráda, který vlastní vlmi dobrý, skoro profesionální, teleskop (on je vlastně jedním z astronomů pracujících s Hubbleovým teleskopem), takže jsme mohli v sobotu večer pozorovat Mars. Byl to opravdu zážitek, zvlášť možnost uvidět polární čepičku a Valles Marineris, neboli marťanský „Velký kaňon“.

Two more days remain to the closest approach of Mars to the Earth in about 60,000 years. If you don’t want to wait for the next one (astronomers say it will happen again in about 284 years), you better pick your telescope and head out of the reach of city lights to enjoy the rare view of the fourth planet. And even if you don’t own a telescope, or don’t know anyone who does, there is still some hope for you. The website of the Hubble Space Telescope will post color pictures of Mars on August 27, after 6 a.m. EDT (12:00, noon, Central European Time). I was lucky enough to have a friend who owns a very good, almost professional, telescope (actually, he is one of the astronomers working with the Hubble Telescope), so we could watch Mars on Saturday night. It was amazing, especially being able to recognize the polar cap and Valles Marineris, the Martian “Grand Canyon”.
