OSN, 14. října – Francie, Rusko a Německo v úterý upustily od svých požadavků, aby USA postoupily OSN ústřední roli při rekonstrukci Iráku a v následujících měsících předaly moc prozatímní irácké vládě.

Tento krok je významným ústupkem hlavních protiválečných obhájců v Radě bezpečnosti a signalizuje jejich obnovoenou ochotu zvážit přednosti americké rezoluce, jejímž cílem je propůjčení větší mezinárodní legitimity americké vojenské okupace Iráku.

Zdá se, že všechny tři země jsou ochotné přijmout rezoluci, která by zachovala americkou pravomoc nad politickou budoucností Iráku a zároveň poskytla Iráčanům pouze symbolickou suverenitu. Stále ale zůstává hlavní sporný bod: Vlády tří zmíněných zemí předložily nové požadavky, včetně sestavení časového plánu ukončení americké vojenské okupace Iráku a posílení role Rady bezpečnosti při monitorování politických změn v Iráku.

Možná zjistily, že čím déle budou proti snahám USA o přestavbu Iráku, tím méně možností budou mít se na nějakém projektu podílet. Peníze nesmrdí. Navíc, problémy, které přály americkým jednotkám, se nekonají. Naopak, školy byly tento měsíc opět otevřeny, 1500 z nich bylo opraveno americkými firmami, učitelé dostávají mnohem větší platy, byla vytvořena silná irácká policie, všechny irácké nemocnice fungují, stejně jako 90% klinik. Opravdu velké problémy!

Takže když teď zjistily, že situace v Iráku se ve skutečnosti zlepšuje, a to bez jejich přispění, Francie, Německo a Rusko se taky pokusí urvat kus koláče. Hodně štěstí.

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 14 – France, Russia and Germany on Tuesday dropped their demands that the United States grant the United Nations a central role in Iraq's reconstruction and yield power to a provisional Iraqi government in the coming months.

The move constituted a major retreat by the Security Council's chief antiwar advocates, and signaled their renewed willingness to consider the merits of a U.S. resolution aimed at conferring greater international legitimacy on its military occupation of Iraq.

All three countries seem willing to accept a resolution that would retain U.S. authority over Iraq's political future while extending only a symbolic measure of sovereignty to Iraqis. But a major sticking point remains: The three governments made new demands, including setting a timetable for ending the U.S. military occupation in Iraq and strengthening the Security Council's role in monitoring Iraq's political transition.

Maybe they realized the longer they opposed the U.S. efforts to rebuild Iraq, the less chances they had to participate in any project there. Money talks. Moreover, the quagmire they wished for the U.S. troops has not been materializing. On the contrary, schools opened this month, 1,500 of them repaired by the U.S. contractors, the teachers receive much higher salaries, there is a substantial Iraqi police force, all Iraqi hospitals are open, as well as 90% of the country’s health clinics. What a quagmire!

So now, when they realized the situation in Iraq is actually improving, no thanks to them, France, Germany and Russia would try to grab a piece of the pie, too. Good luck, guys.
